what is the correct point setting and spark plug number and gap, on a 10 horse model #23? horziantal shaft engine.

Point gap is .020 inchs. You can use Champion J-8C, J-17LM, J-19LM, CJ-8 for spark plugs. Plug gap is .030 inchs. This engine should have a Magnematic magneto. The coil is bad about going bad on this ignition system and is very expensive to replace. Coil P/N is 290880 which is over $100.00 from a briggs dealer. I know as I have a complete set of the Number series B&S engines with this igniton system. Symtoms of a bad coil is the engine will run ok at idle but as you throttle the engine up it starts running poorly. Most mechanics think the have a carb problem. Been there, done that, got the T-shirt. I developed a coil modification for the mag to use a later model B&S coil which can be found on pre 1981 B&S engine. You can still buy this coil new from STEN's and most likey for A B&S dealer if you can not find one to salvage from a bad engine. Please note if you want to replace the point and condenser on this engine with on of the aftermarket electronic ignition you will loose the ignition advance that is built into the point cam on the camshaft.
