we have just discovered an i.h. stationary engine last used by my father some 40 years ago. It was used for driving a beet cutter on the farm. It hasn't run since. It is in fairly good condition, the engine turns over freely, there is some compresson, the valves operate the way one would expect, but with the inlet valve just fluttering and not really fully opening. The wico magneto fires the spark plug. The top oiler is missing and the fuel lift pump is damaged. We need help in getting it started. With petrol (gas) in the mixer chamber (carburettor) and much effort and time turning with the handle the engine has only fired twice and that was in reverse! Without an operators book there are many unknowns. For example, where should the mixture screw be set at 1/4 or 1/2 or 11/2 turns out? What is the valve clearance distance at the end of the push rod? And what is the correct adjustment on the magneto trip linkage where the two springs are? We have read that the plug should be gapped at between 15 and 25 thou. correct? Where is the stop control? What is the secret to getting these ol' injins a running!? We are new to all this so any information would be helpful.
Your replys would be so much appreciated.
ps Next time we're with it, we'ill look for a serial no.

The plug gap should be nearer to 15 than 25...I would be happy with 15. If it hit and went backwards, then your timing is not set correctly...you are looking for hand damage here.
There is a timing mark on the flywheel and on the housing. Make sure the magneto clicks a fraction past TDC which is here these two timing lines match up. There is no cut off switch on this engine. Screw in the screw to cut off the gas (petrol) Nothing magic about the gas adjustment. Out a little to get it started. When running, adjust screw till engine running smoothly. There must be attention to the valves. After sitting all this time, I am wondering if the lifters are stuck and are not working properly. The valves must of course fully open and fully close. Have you had the head off to check the valves and make sure they are seating and not burned up. I would order some rings and put them, clean the carb, new plug and wire, seat the valves and it should run...

Hi Tom, thanks very much for your reply. We will re gap the plug at 15 thou and try that. We think the valves are operating o.k although the timing may be out. We've had the head off and all seems fine. There are two marking on the rim of the fly-wheel namely, IGN and EXH, but we are unable to find the corresponding mark where they should line up with. You don't exactly know where it is do you? It's getting fuel and although the timing may not be exactly correct, we think it should fire more times than it does. We now suspect the magneto or plug. Thanks again for your reply.

If that is a 1-1/2 Type M engine, the mark you are looking for is on the base of the engine, directly down at 6:00. It will be a straight up and down line. The mag should trip when the word 'ign' is in line with that mark. The exhaust valve should just begin to open when the 'exh' is in line with that same mark. Do not forget to give all grease cups a little attention. The one on the end of the crankshaft is left hand thread, so it comes off backward.

Thanks kevin for your reply. I've been away from it all, hence the delay in getting back to you. I will look for the timing marks where you suggest and will be sure to give it fresh grease. Kind regards and thanks. jim
