Why would the manifold and muffler on my VH4D on my mower turn bright red visible at dusk? It doesn't have the power it had before it caught fire last year either. TIA

If it has a distributor, check to make sure the centrifugal advance is working. The fire could have easily damaged the inside of the distributor and as mentioned below, late timing will make them run hot.

About any gas engine at dusk will show some red on the exhaust manifold. Some years ago, more than I like to admitt I was running Dad's 630 JD at dusk, look down at the manifold, saw red and thought something was wrong. The tractor ran for several years like this unrill it was traded off. Exhaust temp of a gas engine is about 1200 degrees F.

Check the compression, to rule out bad valves.

Set the ignition timing to spec, as late timing will cause a HOT exhaust manifold.

Sounds like you may have leaking exhaust valves at the very least. If the engine got hot in the fire the rings may have lost their tension. Sounds like some work there.

Thanks, I was suspecting something like that. I was thinking more valves but rings make more sense. The starter shorted and kept cranking the engine til the battery went dead so I thought the pistons might not have gotten too hot. That maybe saved them from melting like the carb and fuel pump did, but it must have taken the temper out of the rings. I can still mow but have to crawl in the heavy grass.
