Wisconsin VG4D Compression?

What should the compression read on a VG4D Wisconsin V-4 engine in good condition? Also does running one of these on natural gas cause problems with the valves such as recession. Mine has 100 psi on each cylinder. The engine has about 1100 hrs on it and has been run on natural gas.

I checked the valve clearances and they were OK. I took a main fuel jet needle from another zenith carburator and installed it in place of the plug on my carb and adjusted it about 1 1/2 turns out. The engine now starts immediately and runs great. I will probably have to readjust it under load. Thanks for the input. I was about to do a top end job on it.

100 PSI is darn good for a VG4D. You must have the high-compression heads on that engine.
The "D" in the VG4D means it has that later valves and seats and thus you shouldn't have to worry.
Take good care of those heads because they are impossible to find, new or used. I was told by the factory that they would have to gear up and produce new castings in order to make them.

100 psi for compression would seem a little low if cranked with an electric starter with all plugs removed and throttle open. If hand cranking not too bad.

A VG4D in good condition will run on any one cylinder (start with all 4 and short out 3 plugs at a time), only try this with a very small throttle (say 1000 rpm) and no load. This is a good test to find a poor cylinder.

It would be worth checking the tappets (inlet 0.008 inches and exhaust 0.016 inches) with this number of hours up. Also check for recessing of the valve stems into the tappet head. If this has occurred it is impossible to properly set the tappets. This is made worse by running too long between oil changes.

When I checked the compression I had all the spark plugs out, throttle wide open and cranked it with the starter. This was also after I had warmed the engine up. I'll check the valve clearance and check the tappets for recession. I think I'll connect an air line to the spark plug holes, (one at a time with the piston at the bottom of the compression stroke) put pressure on the cylinders and see if I get air coming out the intake, exhaust or crankcase. That should tell me if I have valves leaking through or a ring problem or both. Thanks for the input. This is the first Wisconsin engine I've worked on.

With the airline in sparkplug hole test you need to do this test with piston at TDC on compression stroke. You will need to secure the crank in this position for safety.

At TDC on compression both valves are closed and the piston is in the region where it will probably have most wear and be hit by the highest pressure of the power stroke.

At BDC on the power stroke the exhaust valve will have just started to open and the piston will be in the least worn part of the cylinder.

Dust damage usually wears the middle of the cylinder making it bigger half way down the bore.

Most of this applies to any engine.
