I would post this under the small engine forum, but it doesn't seem to get as much traffic and my questions are more general repair anyway. I have a Wisconsin TFD engine that I am trying to get running again. It hasn't run in several years and when in did, it didn't run very well. I have spark at the plugs so I know the magneto is working. Not sure if it's timed correctly or not, but it's at least working. I don't really know if it's getting fuel delivered or not so I am pulling the carb off to clean it. I don't want to get into a full tear down of the carb, so can I just take it off and soak it in parts cleaner or should I split it in half first. Are there any other general things I should check first before I get into tearing the engine apart to get it running again. I don't think it is anything major wrong with it, but not real sure what the best place to start will be.

Take a shot of starter and spray it into the top where you screw the spark plug in. Sometimes it's just a matter of suction. Secondly, was the gas drained, all of it, either before it was put away or when you tried to start it up. Gas will go stale. Hope this helps. Paul

You will need to open the carb up, if you don't and there is any plastic parts inside it they will no longer be good if all you do is drop it in the soup. Plus you will need to blow out the passagese after soaking it in carb cleaner
