W6 Gas Gauge

If you need a float with a hole in the center, that a wire passes through, check out fuel senders from junked vehicles. As an example, a fuel gauge sender float from a 1990 Chevy pickup is plastic, and has a hole through the center for the wire float arm.

Also, I understand some radiator shops that repair gas tanks have a source for floats.

For gosh sakes, don't use some insulating foam, or other substance that will eventually disolve!

Can you imagine the mess that would make in the fuel system!

I also heard of a guy using balsa wood to make a float like that, but he had to put some sort of paint or epoxy on it to keep it from getting waterlogged with gas after a while. I understand that the problem with using most plastic foam like insulation board is that eventually the gasoline dissolves it. But there supposedly is some epoxy, maybe the kind that boatbuilders use, that you can coat it with that resists gas.
