Spark plug thread repair

I have an aluminum head from an air cooled engine with the plug threads pulled out of it. It takes a 7/8" plug. The threads are not 7/8" NF. Does anybody make a helicoil type repair kit for these? What other options do I have besides finding another head? Thanks for any help.

There is a wonderfull product made for thread repair of almost any size including spark plugs. Its called Time-Sert. It is a permanent thread repair. As a former almn/cyl head shop mgr. we used them to save heads daily! They work great and stay in, unlike heli-coils that can come out. Our distributor was Winzer Inc. If you can't find them let me know.

Be sure not to try and oversize the hole.
Get an 18mm thread repair kit or see your favorite auto-truck-tractor machinist and have them put in a replacement thread.
Spark plug threads are most likely metric even though the wrench is fractional sized.

I noticed that 3/4" iron pipe thread seems to be a possibility for an oversize thread bushing. It would probably be pretty small to drill and tap to 7/8-18 for the original plug, might use 1" pipe thread if you want the original plug size.

I don't know offhand what the pitch of the 7/8" plugs is but if you can't find a helicoil you could thread the stripped hole to any larger size and have a repair plug machined and threaded to screw into the head. The repair plug could be internally threaded to fit the 7/8" spark plug, 18MM, or whatever you want. Another alternative is to have the hole welded up, then redrilled and tapped. Hope this helps.
