I have an International 3200A Skidsteer with a VH4D Wisconsin engine in it. The gear broke on the magneto and I got a another magneto from a friend who knows wisconsins and said the one he gave me would work. The one I took off my engine was a Fairbanks\Morris and he gave me a Wico. Now the engine is backfiring like crazy and acts like it is out of time. Do I need to get another magneto or is something more serious going on? Thanks, Norma

Try the link at Unofficial site for some info on the magnetos used on Wisconsins. The Wico XH-1263 is different to time on the odd fire engines and dist. rotor on that mag runs direct off mag shaft while the Fairbanks Morse used a gear drive dist. rotor for the even fire engines and another Wico was made like that also. Sounds like you got it out of time or have wrong mag. Post more info if you still have problems on the stationary engine forum. www.wisconsinmotors.com

Some Wisconsins, I don't know if that is the case with yours, are "odd-fire", meaning the breaker point cam lobes in the mag or distributor are not equally spaced. These have to have one exact correlation between the mag shaft's position and the crankshaft

If your engine is like that and the mag doesn't match, or if the replacement mag is made like that, and installed on an even-fire engine, a miss or backfire may result. Or, you may simply have the timing to early or too late, or the wires may not be attached to the mag and spark plugs in proper firing order.

check firing order,maybe old mag and new mag had more or less teeth on gear? why not just get a new /used gear for old mag if everything else on old mag is ok?
