Had to split my Ford 801 yesterday and got to looking at the clutch and noticed the drive clutch was about 3/32 thinner than the pto clutch which I understand because I seldom use the pto. Question is have any of you rebuilt a two stage? The drive clutch looks like a pretty common spline and I"m guessing the high cost of the whole unit is the Large Spline pto clutch, which I don"t need. I"m choking over the $550 for a rebuilt unit! Do you have a clutch and brake relining shop nearby? If the steel discs and hubs are OK, they can re-line the discs for a fraction of the cost of someone's exchange unit.

Also, likely they can disassemble the pressure plate and grind the faces of the traction and PTO clutch pressure plates as needed, and check the tension of the springs, replacing them, if needed.

Don't forget to grind the flywheel!

Bob, Thanks again Now that it is Monday I called two shops in Indy to check on this. $385 at one place for one in a box, that"s better... Second place I called I ask if they did custom work and sure enough they said they would put in a new drive disk for $150 including the disc! He said it takes to machines to align it and put it together. Richard

Richard, just remember not every shop can do this repair. It doesn't take but one fixture to set these up if you have the right one. Also, take some extra cash if the plates are bad. Do it once and do it right. I have 12 to 13 of these units in stock or being reworked. Also, be sure and look the back plate over closely as they are bad to crack. Thats the one that has the pins/springs. Also, no need to have the flywheel refaced the 311435 clutch does not use the flywheel for a clutch surface.....Kelly.
