I have a FArmallH and a aliis chalmers wd i would liket o change over to 12 volts could someone tell me the best way to do this and also whats the best kind of altinator to use?

The alternator off a japaneese car is smaller than the delco unit and cheaper from the wrecking yard too. Put one on my Allis and it fits and works well. Almost the same diameter as the old generator. Bet it would work on an H as well. If looks are a factor and money is not there is an alternator that will fit inside the case of a generator. They make them for Harleys to convert generator to alternator. Saw one in a catalog but never in person (that I know of cause they fit inside the old case so who knows)seems like the price was somewhere north of $400.

Joe, Those sizes of tractors ought to start fine with a good heavy duty battery and 00 Gauge Battery n Starter n Ground cables, but if you insist on converting to 12 volts, I like the GM 10SI 3 wire alternators cuz they are cheap n very available. Or you can go with a One Wire Alternator, they cost more but are easier to wire. Or else just stay with the Generator system by using a 12 volt Generator (or have yours rebuilt to 12) and a 12 volt Voltage Regulator. And a 12 volt battery, of course. If you go with an alternaotr rated a lot more then 20 amps (which almost all are) I usually run new 10 gauge wire up to the ammeter and from the ammeter to the battery or starter post.

If you go that route you gotta:

1) Change over to Negative ground if youre not there already, which invloves swapping the ammeter leads if it has one (so it dont read bass ackwatds) and swapping the coil polarity.

2) If you wanna use the old 6 volt coil you gotta add a series voltage dropping (12 to 6) Ballast Resistor ahead of the coil after the switch, or else just get a full 12 volt rated coil. The Ballast resistors are around 1.5 to 1.85 ohms and 30 watts or so power rated.

3) Change light bulbs n lights to 12 volts.

John I agree with almost all of what you said, but on an H there really isn't enough room under the hood for a delco alternator. But other then that your on the money as always.

Most tractors theres no real reason to go to 12 volts other then the fact tha talternator systems seem to last longer with little or no trouble. Other then that why do so. My name doesn't really refer to my age either. Lets say I'm old enough to be a vietnam era vet, which I am. I'm young enough that if I had retired when I should have I'd still be working and would be for at least 10-15 years. I had to retired not because I wanted to but because I was told I had to because of health problems, I.E. back and other joint problems.
