Harold, One reason coils run hot is when someone converts from 6 to 12 volts and fails to add a series voltage dropping (12 to 6) ballast resistor ahead of the coil. A "weak" condensor could cause a weaker spark and shorten points life, but I dont see it as making a coil overheat "badly" UNLESS ITS DEAD SHORTED, but that wouldnt allow her to fire at all, nor should a new battery assuming its the correct voltage and same as an old battery. Overcurrent overheats a coil, but if the points are good and working, the condensors NOT shorted, and shes producing a spark, I dont see why a coil should run hot unless its plain out going bad. Of course, a coil going bad may simply overheat and that could be the cause even if all else is okay, but it will eventually fail if thats so. If the points were gapped way too close, that increases the duty cycle of coil current draw which can make it run some hotter, you may wanna check the points gap !!!!! !!!!
