I turned the key on last night and I had +2 on my amp meter. When the engine was rolling over, it went down to - 4 amps. Then at idle it stayed at -2 amps and then at full throtle it went down to -8 amps. I"m not sure if this is correct.

The history on my 9n is. The guy I bought it from had it given to him. He said the tractor ran he even tried to start it for me when I pick it up but it would not start. I got it started but it did not run correctly. I was putting a tune up kit in it and found out the the points where gapped at .025". ( He gave me a manuel for a side mounted distrubitor the book says .025") I got the correct gap .015" and the tractor started right up. I still have a valve or lifter ticking on # 3 cylinder and the it smells like its running rich. Reading my new manuel I need to go back and re-check the timing and make sure that it is correct. I think if I can get the valve/lifter fix and set the carb correctly. Then start out lightly working it, It should be a good running tractor

thanks Jeff

With the tractor not running if turning the ignition on made it read + charging (you say + 2 amps) the ammeter is wired bass ackwards and needs its wires swapped. It should show a few amps - discharge when its not running and loads such as lights or ignition are switched on. This tractor hasnt had its battery polarity reversed has it???

Yes, the old battery was hooked up backwards. I put a new battery in it correctly pos.to ground and repolarize it.

Then my best guess is when the battery polarity was previously reversed, they swapped ammeter leads so it would read correct, so now you need to switch it back i.e. reverse the ammeter leads.

thanks John, I will check that out. I'm sure a new wiring harness would be a good idea also
