I recently had my Farmall engine at the shop were it was tanked, decked, etc.. and they were kind enough to paint the external surfaces.

However, I am not sure what red they used (its a Farmall) and I figure I should top coat the engine before assembling.

My question is: what level of surfce prep is required if I don"t know what style paint they used underneath and I assume they did not run it to the quality levels I will (epoxy primer with PPG Omni). Do I need to completely remove the paint or can a scuff work with good adhesion with my top coat?

Simple chemistry my man. You never know till you try or have all the formulas. Start by askin the shop what paint they used and then find out if your system is compatible.
