Sandblast Before or After Seals?

Doing a ground-up restoration of 1950 MM tractor. Intend to replace rear axle and other seals. Should sand blasting of rearend iron be done prior to new seals being installed, or after? Have never done this before and would appreciate any and all advise.

I agree with George and Rusty,however,it seems there are those people who will sandblast an assembled part,machine,whatever.They must use tubes of silicone,duct tape,who knows.I cant get myself to blast high pressure sand at something that is already put together.Sand has got to get past the protection in some quantity.Not good for internals of anything with moving parts.

Sandblasting a complete tractor is a no no. If you want to take the tractor apart and then sandblast individual pieces that's OK. The sand will go right past the seals and get into the internals of the tractor, you will not know it until the bearings start failing.

Unless you are going to do a complete teardown, I'd stay away from sandblasting altogether. No matter how well you mask everything off, you still run the risk of getting abrasive where you don't want it!

Depends on who is doing the sandblasting.I prefer to replace the seals after sandblasting in case some sand gets blown past the seal.You could coat the seal with some heavy grease.Sand doesn't penetrate grease very well at all.
