I HAVE RECENTLY AQUIRED A 1971 FORD 2000 3 CYL GAS TRACTOR. THE ONLY WAY IT WILL STAY RUNNING IS WITH THE STARTER ENGAGED (IN START POSITION). HAVE REPLACED THE IGNITION SWITCH. IS MY SOLENOID AND/OR COIL BAD, OR IS IT SOMETHING ELSE? HAVE BEEN TRYING TO FIGURE IT OUT FOR 6 DAYS NOW, NO LUCK. YOUR ADVICE WOULD BE GREATLY APPRECIATED. THANKS, CHAD

The resistance wire is integrated in the wiring harness and has apparently failed. The reasonable choices are to run a new wire from the ignition switch ign terminal to a new, resisted coil and eliminate the bypass start feature or run a new wire from the switch to a new ballast resistor and retain the coil and bypass starting wire from the start relay. The second would be the cheaper and probably would insure better cold starts.

You are right to retain the bypass starting feature if you can.

I have worked on tractors with problems like yours. I think that if there is two wires on the battery side of the coil it has external resistance. I have seen many tractors that have been changed from internal to external to help starting. This makes replacing parts a little harder. I doubt that a internal resistance coil will work if installed with an external resistance wiring system. It will start though. I would just jump the coil to the battery and if it runs then you will have to check the wiring and coil for compatability. Good Luck

Sure is a problem, only thing i noticed above and beyond the help so far, is that the ingition switch was changed? is it possible that the run wire has been put onto the start post, with the soloniod wire that operates the starter If the soloniod has been changed there might be a problem with the orginal having an extra terminal than the new one? simple thing to do if the new switch is different shape/terminals arranged different,etc. Keep at it TG the "small" things are hardest to find.

THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH FOR YOUR HELP, I JUST WISH THAT YOUR SUGGESTIONS WERE MY SOLUTIONS. I DIDN'T FIND THE CIRCUIT LIMITING RESISTOR ON MY TRACTOR. I TRIED EVERY SOLUTION YOU ADVISED, AND STILL HAVE TO HOLD THE KEY IN START POSITION FOR ENGINE TO STAY RUNNING.(NOT FOR MORE THAN SECONDS, OF COURSE) ANY MORE HELPFUL HINTS?

Boy -- this is getting to be a tough one. Some cars have a resistance wire which does the same thing as the current limiting resistor, but I doubt that your tractor has one.

Could be a bad ignition switch. How about hotwiring the tractor. Run a wire from the non-ground side of the battery to the hot side of the coil (the terminal not going to the points). The tractor should now run after the starter is released.

I don't know if this applies to yours, but some IH tractors have a wire that goes from the starting switch to the ammeter. If the wire is connected the the wrong post on the starting switch, the switch must be closed (engaged) to complete the circuit, and the engine dies when you release the switch.

No. as far as your second post. There should be a resistor in line with the coil that is probably the problem replace it and see what happens

Sounds like your curent limiting resistor for the coil is bad. Short it out with a piece of wire and see what happens

I agree with the others. If your tractor has an ignition resistor,then it is most likley open and needs to be replaced. If your tractor has a seperate start and run circuit from the ignition switch,then the run circuit has an open connection. ABSOLUTLY DO NOT short a wire across the + and - terminals of the ignition coil. This will cause a dead short and burn up the ignition primary wiring.

No. The resistor is usually a rectangular ceramic (maybe 1"x1"x3") part mounted between the ignition switch and the coil. The starter solenoid has an internal switch that bypasses this device which allows for more current to flow through the coil producing a hotter spark. When this item fails, you only get a spark when the starter is engaged. (Do not run your tractor for any length of time with this resistor shorted out as you will shorten the life of the points.) Of course this assumes your tractor has a current limiting resistor -- some engines do not.
