I just bought a used belarus 800 tractor. Its a 12 volt system and has two 12 volt batteries linked together..pos to pos and neg to neg.It has a 24 volt startar.Im told the reason it wont start is because I need something between the batteries that combines the two together to produce 24 volts to starter. Is that true? The way I see it two 12 volt batteries linked together should send 24 volts to the starter. Is it missing something to help it start?I cant get it to even turn over.He told me it would start if I just replaced the two batteries.and said it has a rebuilt starter.[so I bought it} Was this a mistake? It will start if you pull it but my 8n ford wont pull that 9000 lb thing fast enough. My wife says I just bought a yard ornament..an expensive one at that.HELP...

You don't have a plant stand for the boss:)
What you have at present is two batteries hooked in parallel[ 12volts] what you need is a series/parallel relay to connect the batteries in series[24volt] for starting and back to 12volt for running conditions. Any dealer or heavy truck service facility should have one in stock or can order one. Hopefully the previous owner didn't remove the orginal relay and associated wiring,, so it will be a simple wire off/wire on repair.
There is a web site for belarus equipment[ belarus.ca] which will show dealer locations in case you need more info.
good luck

I just spent several hours trying to get a Belarus 250AS started. Widow wanted $2K for it and I couldn"t even get it running. The 250AS has a compression release lever that you had to open until you get decent rpms from the starter then you close it and the starter bogs down and smoke starts to puff out of the stack. I never got it running though, and at $2k, I wasn"t going to spend too much time puttering on it.

For your 24V starter, you should be able to connect them in series (+ of one batt to - of other batt, then two remaining terminals to system) and then try to do a real quick swap of one terminal back to a single batt 12V system? Just something for quick trouble shooting. The relay Dennis mentioned is really what you need though. Good luck!
