If the problem is that the cord only pulls out a couple of inches then springs back in, the stud that the cutting head is screwed to stuck to the shaft, maybe from dirt or age. You can unscrew the cutting head and the retaining nut to get to the stud. Then loosen it up and put it back together making sure not to tighten the retaining nut too tight. If the cord won't pull out at all, then loosen the throttle grip and slide it forward. There's a clamp under there that needs to be loosened. And the throttle cable disconnected. Then remove the other screws and the whole front cover should come off. Good luck.

Will: same thing happened to my Homelite. I"m betting it isn"t the cord--the wrist pin has came loose and is jammed in a port. I ended up having to swap out the powerhead with one from another Homelite a friend had that had fried the head. If it is indeed the cord, you will need a special tool for the clutch, and a torx-head screwdriver for the bolt that is inside the section that hooks to the shaft. If you get the shroud and shaft off, then look inside the piece where the shaft is hooked (basically the outside clutch housing) and there will be a screw at the bottom of this shaft.
