I have an 8n (1952) and I have replaced the starter drive and had the starter checked to be in great condition. I removed the inspection tab on the bellhousing and noticed the ring gear turning but the motor was not. What will cause this and how to repair. Thanks

The ring gear should be affixed to the flywheel by the heat shrink method. If the ring gear spins but not the flywheel you will need to split the tractor to fix. Some people tac-weld the ring gear to the fly wheel which will work OK if you tac-weld it in about 4 places, but the heat shrink method is the best way. James

Thanks jwm I will try to repair by welding through the starter hole and mabe get buy till winter. I will have more time to split and repair the correct way then. I just hope it will hold. From inspection through the starter hole I noticed the bevel on the ring gear was towards the front of the tractor and I thought it should be to the rear so the starter would mesh up corectly.

Well, which way does your Bendix engage? Some from the front and some from the rear. Last ring gear I looked at, bout a month ago had no bevels....Ford 2n.

I'd think that on this job, he is past the norm and needs the emergency action. Course dunno why his is slipping.
