Question: Is there anything to be wary of when using oven cleaner to clean grease and gunk off a tractor? Do you spray it on and wipe it off?

Oven cleaner just got too expensive for me. I use lye gravy made with Sodium Hydroxide and corn starch.

If you have a walmart, pick up a gallon of purple power. Works great,might have to scrape some of the thicker hardened grease. It's cheap and works for all kinds of stuff.

The only experience I have with using oven cleaner is on engines that were caked on and filthy with dirt and grease. I had the engines removed from the vehicle and after spraying them down, let them soak for a few hours. After that a good scrubbing with both an old wire brush and a scrub brush. Then I pressure washed them off the best I could using Dawn dishwashing detergent and clean water rinse. I wasn't worried about painted parts whether or not the paint was removed, dulled or etc. Worked well for me for what I used and needed it for.

WOD, I have used oven cleaner on grease and such with pretty good effect. The local grocery store has it for $1 per can! Sometimes I have used a scrub brush if the build up was real deep or hardened. I usually let it soak awhile and then hit it with the pressure washer. About the only thing I can think of to watch for is that you don't want to get it on any paint you that you plan on keeping. If it doesn't remove the paint it will at least be hard on it. And, of course, take care that you don't let it splash back into your eyes when scrubbing it or washing it off.
