(Trying not to get Blue and gray mixed up) On each side of the steering box should be a nut of about 1 1/8 inch in dia on the end of a cast steel steering arm. The nut is screwed onto a shaft (each side of tractor) with a slot in it. Loosen the nut and screw the screw into the steering box till it gets firm, or stops, or the friction abruptly gets higher than it was. Rotate the steering wheel back and forth and watch the steering arms coming out of the box. Also feel the resistance you have to steering (may have to jack the tractor up to do this.) I tighten mine till I have all the friction that I can stand in manually steering the tractor, which isn't all that much. I like my steering tight. When finished lock the nut and hold the screw so that it doesn't rotate as you do so. Check your fluid level in the steering box. Should be a 1/4" pipe square headed plug on the top, engine side of the steering box. Remove the plug and you should see 90w oil about a half inch below the threads of the housing. If none filler up to there. If it leaks out go get some Lubriplate #105 grease at your auto store and use that. Works fine on worn seals. Now. If your wheel and your steering arms (coming out of the steering box) aren't pretty tight to each other (not a lot of slop in the gears between the arms and steering shaft), you will need to do some repair work on the box or the steering shaft gear. Having finished that put the front tires back on the ground. Now rock the steering wheel back and forth and starting with your eyes at the steering arms from the steering box, visually walk down the arm to the tie rod end and as you rock see that the tie rod end causes the tie rod to move without any play in it. If there is play, it is worn out and should be replaced ($20 ish). Continue down the tie rod to the end at the front wheel spindle arm and chech that one. Should be no play whatsoever. Then go to the other side and do the same. Now as you continue to rock, watch the front axle and see if it moves back and forth (much) with respect to the tractor frame which would indicate a front axle center pin worn ( the pin that the axle pivots up and down on). Finally, continuing to rock look at where your front axle stabilizer arm attaches to the side of the tractor's frame. Any movement of the arm vs the cap held over the end with 2 screws indicates wear. Check both sides. This can be repaired by cutting pieces of an aluminum can and raising the cap and sticking them under it till the slop is gone. Grease everything good before you put the cap back on.
