I am looking into finding myself a summer project and want to restore a tractor. I was just curious for some input on what make and model would be easiest to restore. I would like to restore an old allis chalmers d series, but those are hard to come by. We have 2 farmall 140s that are around mid 70's models (have key ignition), which are a little newer than I want. I have seen a farmall M in the photo classifieds that is near where I live (Midway, Ky). It is not running right now, but for $750 it seems like something I could have fun with and learn from. I am 15, but my dad has a shop on our horse farm, so I will have a place to store it. I don't want to spend more than about $1250 up front and want to have something that will sell well when it is finished. Any input on a model or brand. Thanks

I am a IH man myself, but old JD poppin' johnnies are pretty easy and cheap to find if you look long enough and you can get basically any part you need. I've restored a farmall m and parts were also pretty easy to find. Ebay helps a lot too! HAVE FUN!

$750 for a running M is a good price IF the tractor is all there and not beat all to pieces.

M FARMALLS ARE A GOOD TRACTOR TO RESTORE. PLENTY OF PARTS AVAILABLE.I THINK IT WOULD BE A LOT EASIER JUST FROM A PARTS STANDPOINT.

If it"s your first tractor make sure it plucks at your heart strings. The best have a story. The kind of tractor that was left and forgotten and dosen"t run anymore. Then this will happen. After many moons of knuckle busting and having friends and family thinking "the next step for him is extended care", you will start it for the first time. The first time in many, many years perhaps, life to a forgotten old work horse that was the family"s pride and joy, a source of pride for the neighbors to behold. It will start running, rough or otherwise and you will step back (after making sure it won"t self distruct)and smile an uncontrlled smile the kind of smile that is equivalent to dancing like no body is watching kinda smile, a breaking your face kind of smile and those family and friends will step back and, with all the certainty of an expert, know that the time for an extended care facility is getting close! When I stared my first "dead" tractor, an F-12, I sat back and looked and listened for so long my kids thoght I had had a stoke! Wow, sorry for the yadda yadda but it had to be said.

If you're planning on making a financial killing on your project, take a little time and figure in the cost of your time, labor, parts, etc. first. Then retore the tractor for the "right" reasons, to preserve a piece of our American heritage, to learn to appreciate how things used to be manufactured, to learn to deal with set-backs (there will be more than a few) and to learn how to defer your gratification, because it is going to take you a while to do a restoration correctly. At the tender age of 15, you have taken the correct first step; you have sought the assistance and wisdom of those who have successfully accomplished what you now have chosen to attempt to do. Welcome! There are many here who will drop whatever they are doing to assist you in that endeavor. Now, find the best picture that you can of a perfectly restored Farmall M and post it on your refrigerator. That will be your ideal. Determine how close you are willing to come to that standard, and then you will have your goal. Best of luck!
