How would you build one and what do you use in it? How do you operate it? No, i ain't worried about insurance or the epa.

What I use is a 55 gallon barrel with about 40 gallons of water in it and about five pounds of sodium hydroxide (also known as caustic soda or lye). Add the sodium hydroxide slowly to the water while stirring, or it will tend to clump in the bottom of the barrel. I planned to use it outside where I could build a small fire under it, but never got around to moving it outside, so I just use it inside my shop at normal temperature, which is around fifty five degrees. It works fine for me, but instead of taking a few hours if it was hot, I leave parts in for several days to a week depending on how dirty and coated with paint they are. The sodium hydroxide will eventually be neutralized, so more will have to be added as it is used. Any time you use sodium hydroxide, or lye, be sure to wear rubber gloves, good goggles, and a face shield. Just one drop in an eye can cause major damage. Get a copy of the MSDS for sodium hydroxide and read it before using.
