I have an engine with a lot of old grease and paint and surface rust on it. what would be the best way to clean it. Also what would the cost difference be.

The engine block on my 8N was solid crud inside and out. Had it hot tanked for $50 and came back clean inside and out. All paint was even gone from outside of block and nice clean cast. I don't know what he soaked it in but must be real strong. Great results.

Most oven cleaning systems use a steel abrasive blaster for follow up. You personally have to make sure all the steel shot is out of every little crook and cranny.Caution on cyl heads in ovens it loosen valve seats and and passenger cars with press fit rocker studs sometimes will loosen them.I guy posted for help the other day his shop man ran a Tractor Supply power block through the oven."O" rings on sleeves.We dont recommend any type of cleaning on those other than a pressure washer.Earl In Illinois

When you asked about baking I was thinking of taking it to a machine shop that has an oven cleaning system. done correctly it will make cast iron look like new. Price depends a little on the size of the engine. Also if you remove all oil gallery plugs, soft plugs cam bearings etc. you may get a price break.

To me, hot tanking is to get most of the crud out of the water passages. Scrapers, oven cleaner, and pressure washing will take care of the outside, if you are not concerned about the inside. Could take 3 times or so with the oven cleaner/pressure washing, but it will eventually come off.
