I have had no problem with my Oliver until last weekend. She was continually stalling out couldn't get her to fire until I used a spray of engine start, she would fire and then stall. The fuel was getting to the carb. I drain the carb and then restarted and was fine. Then the next day I went to use it again and it will not start even with engine start. So I did the same thing again this time I check the distributor, rotor plugs cleaned them all but I did a stupid thing I took the wires off the coil to clean and forgot which was in and out positive or negative. Of course I haven't tried to start it again until I get this answer but what do you think it might be. It never acted this way before. As a matter of fact it was very warm in NJ when this happened. It started up all winter in the very cold. Ummmmm. Please help.

If ether makes it fire- you have spark, but not enough gas. Might be a plugged passage in the carb. If visual inspection does not show the problem after you take it apart (float valve, needle valves) you could boil the carb body in water for 15-20 minutes. Worked on one of mine a few days ago. Boils out the crud in small passageways.

Rule of thumb: What ever the polarity of the ground cable of the battery, the same is true for the coil. In your case the Oliver was built with a positive ground so the wire to the distributor attaches to the positive coil terminal. When you crank it over, will your spark jump a 3/8 inch gap at the plug or coil? Do your plugs get wet, If not you are not get fuel in the cylinder. What are you using for a point gap? Questions?

I didn't do that test to see if I am getting a spark at the coil or plug. Couldn't do it by myself while turning the key. Yet to figure on how to do that? I just wanted to reconnect the coil up and see if that made a difference. The distributor wasn't wet or damp. Has new plugs, coil, rotor etc since last year. Maybe it was damper than I thought. I lost one of my books that had the wiring diagram in it. I mostly have my Oliver sent out if it gets too complicated for me. I just know the basics. But it is getting more difficult to get my tractor to the place for fixing. NJ is not farm country much anymore. Plus it is getting parts is a whole another story.

You can check the coil by removing the distributor cap, pull the coil wire from the cap and lay it next to the engine and snap the points with a screwdriver. If spark jumps it's ok.

When you choke it and try to start it and if it does not start do the plugs get wet from fuel? How far will this spark jump and is it nice and blue?
