Starter Burning Out

I have a Case 1120, 19hp. The starter burned out and we had it reworked. Put it back on and it would only click. Took it back and had it rebuilt. Started half a dozen times. Sounded like the battery was nearly down as it started. New battery - correct size. Starter burned out again. Was told to put new heavy duty cables on. This we did. Now going to replace starter with a new one. Any suggestions as to what may be causing starter to burn out?

HAD YOU DONE ANYTHING TO THE ENGINE BEFORE THIS STARTED? JERRY MAKES SOME GOOD POINTS. ALSO CONSIDER THAT A BATTERY THAT IS LOW SENDS A LOWER VOLTAGE TO THE STARTER AND LOWERING THE VOLTAGE TO ALMOST ANY ELECTRIC MOTOR WILL INCREASE THE HEAT OUTPUT AND CAN CREATE PROBLEMS FOR YOU.
IF THE IGNITION TIMING HAS SLIPPED TO THE ADVANCED SIDE THE ENGINE WILL CREATE MORE RESISTANCE TO THE STARTER'S TURNING IT. HAD A BROTHER IN LAW THAT PUT A COUPLE OF STARTERS IN A CHEVROLET BEFORE HE DISCOVERED THE CENTRIFUGAL ADVANCE WEIGHTS IN THE DISTRIBUTOR HAD RUSTED ENOUGH TO STICK THEM IN THE ADVANCED POSITION.GOOD LUCK WITH YOUR PROBLEM!

Had the tractor about six months. We hadn't done anything to the engine. It is a 3 cylinder, 19 HP diesel. We have now replaced the battery cables with new heavy duty ones and a new battery. We are going to just buy a new starter and go from there. Will be this week-end before we can get the starter. Thanks for your help.

Just a guess here but, from some experience with "high torque" starters several years ago, I would think perhaps your rebuilder is trying to rebuild the starter for maximum torque. Rather than the original gauge wire used in the rewind he is using larger wire and this cause the starter to produce more starting power but at the expense of heat generation.

We were putting together a Pontiac 400 and were building it up quit a bit. A regular starter would turn it over barely enough to start the engine even when it was cold. We had the starter rewound to get more starting power from it.The starter would spin the engine very quickly BUT if the engine did not start after a few seconds the starter would get very hot and you could smell it.

Something you might take a look at is the solenoid. Cheap (China made) parts can not handle the high amperages associated with big batteries and large engines. (been there.done that. got the burnt out parts to prove it.) If your solenoid is cheap, old or both, you might consider replacing it.
