HI all,

I am new to this forum, although have been on some of the other forums at this site. I am hoping to get some help regarding reparing the carburator on my old snowblower. This past weekend, the choke tube inside the carburator (old Briggs&Stratton) snapped off. It appears that I can drill out a rivet and slide the two pieces out, however can aluminum be 'butt' joined together with reliable results? Alternatively, I can splice the pieces together with some pins and such, but would still want to put something over it to help support things.

Any advice would be appreciated!

Hi again,

I tried working with the JB Weld last night to try and fix this part. We have no dealers for any aluminum/zinc/pot metal type repair rod anywhere near me.

After cleaning and grooving the break line and surrounding area, I brought everything to the house and 'welded' it up. Awkward thing to position and hold together, but this morning, it was back in one piece and feels quite strong. I will be letting it continue to cure for the rest of the day, and re-assemble it tonight.

Thanks for all your help and suggestions! I know I will be keeping a tube of this stuff around from now on!

J_B Weld made for jobs like this.I think{although I have no way of knowing other than laboratory testing and dont want to sound like a know it all]most carbs are zinc.Maybe a few aftermarket car and bike carbs are al.

I would find a "donor" carburetor. I THINK I understand what your talking about, could you post a picture? I'm thinking some of the later carbs had the part made of plastic.

The other thing is, the part may not even be aluminum. I think some of the carb parts are made of "pot metal" (whatever that is), which is even more useless to try to repair than aluminum.

Lots of parts made of Zinc. Casts easily, lightweight and needs no protective cover. It is definitely "pot metal".

For reconstruction, JB Weld (autostore) works well. Can be drilled and tapped; shape to desired dimensions....would probably take several layers.

For butt joints, might spray some Kopper Koat (autostore)on the seam. It is made for seating head gaskets, having copper powder and an excellent adhesive, but I use it for all kinds of sealing jobs. Can spray on thin coat prior to assembling parts. Gas proof.

I cannot post pictures easily (lack of digital photo equipment)so that will unfortunately be a wash. The carb is about 30 years old, a cold weather model specifically for the snow blowers. There is a horizontal tube that runs to the head, and the choke is a secondary tube that moves inside the main one. A small rivet keeps the choke tube in place and limits the travel. The motor is only 5hp and the design is a single stage, but it works like a champ for back-up when the tractor is down. There appears to be no plastic anywhere in the carb, and you are correct, it may not even be aluminum. I have found some references to zinc based rods (durafix, HTS-2000) that claim to work on all zinc based alloys and aluminum (including white metals, and "anything with pores"). If I can find a donor that will obviously be the best bet. A new one can be found as well, but $205 is not quite as easy to find right now.
