Hello everyone, I have a older backhoe, a 1966, I have to rebuild a couple cylinders on it. The widths of the cylinders range from 5-7 inches.Should Ibother buying the special wrenches for the end cap and brass nut, I mean the age of the thing, and the way the wrenches have looked, It seems like Im going to snap all that money I spend on them in half. Im not an expert on these things but everything I have I fix myself, I figure it out eventually. I would like to just put the cylinder in my pipe vise and heat it up and crank on it with a pipe wrench and a long pipe. Just trying to remove the set scew, the head of it broke off that basically means everthing is pretty much seized up. But asking is always best first. Any advice would be appreciated. thanks alot, sam

I had the very same question for a friend of mine who is a good tractor mechanic...does he use spanners on the cylinders? (I have an old skid loader that I've got to take some cylinders apart on). He said he just cranks them open with a pipe wrench and saves the $$ for other tools. I guess I'll give that a try.
