I'm restoring an Ariens Emporer model 195000 riding mower and was wondering about replacing the decals on the control panel and in the steering wheel hub. I removed the control panel and steering wheel insert and scanned images of them into my computer. Restored the color and have a good template now. I'm considering taking this template to a commercial quick copy shop (Kinko's in my area) and having it printed on a color laser using water transfer white decal paper (see link). Once the decals have dried, they recommend overspraying with a clear acrylic spray to protect the decal from weather and wear.

Has anyone used this technique?

Price is the main reason. The laser water transfer decals are about $2 for an 8.5 x 11 page (from Kinko's). Cheapest I found vinyl was near $50 for one.

Ithink you need an all plastic decal[maybe uv resistant].If there is any paper fibre in the decal it wont last.Dont lots of sign shops have a way to do this?

While they call it a paper decal, its actually a "laquer film" on a paper back. You remove the paper when you apply the decal. The ink from a color laser would be water-fast and an over-spray of acrylic varnish would extend the water proofing as well as add an UV protectent (see link and photo of several available products) to help prevent fading.

I'd be storing the mower in fully enclosed machine shed so no exposer to the elements and the only exposure to direct sun would be while I'm mowing.

I've seen this stuff at the hobby shops and have often thought about it for custom decals on hobby projects. I havent given any thought to a project that would be outside exposed to sun, rain, hot, freezing. It seems like a quick and easy way to make a custom or hard to get decal but you might want to make a pratice run by putting one on a surface and letting the sun and weather have its way with it for a while to see how it reacts. The sun may fade the ink and the rain may mess with the adheasion but if not, then I think you're on to something. Keep us posted.
