Im currently restoring a Mayfield Brushwood cutter which is powered by a 4 stoke Villiers Mk 20 engine. All is going well except that I need to remove the fly wheel to access the ignition. The central nut on the end of the crank shaft has loosened but then tightens again after about one complete turn. Can anyone give me advice on how to remove the flywheel as Im reluctant at this stage to apply too much force until I know what is going on.

If My memory serves me right. you loose the nut until it goes slack then continue to loosen it until the flywheel comes off

Bob, Thinkin back, does the retaining nut act as a removal puller when loosened, try bumping the nut with a brass dolly punch and see if it comes. cheers.
