I read somewhere in this forum that it's possible to remove rust by using a lye solution and a battery charger. Can anyone give me a detailed procedure for same or tell me where I can find one? Also, is there a downside to using such a technique? Thanks in advance for any help.

I tried this method on a lubester cast iron pump. I was quite impressed. Next week I plan to try it on the steel lubester tank.
Would it hurt anything to use copper wire as the contact between clamp and part?

Thanks Bob. I checked out the F.I.T.'s site and printed the pertinent info. I'm doing a 50 JD B and a JD model 52 plow as well. I'm going to try it on some of the smaller parts this weekend.

Works pretty slick. I recently recovered some internal parts for a Clark transaxle that were in a shed that got wet. Two key principles I discovered are:
Don't get the polarity backwards!
The bigger the battery charger, the faster it works. I have a roll around model from Sears. I cranked it up to where it was running about 30 to 40 amps. Much quicker results than with a 10 amp unit.
