super c rebuild questions

Here goes, I've just aquired a 1952 super c and
need some advice on some engine work that it needs. Just got it running today and although
it runs nice and smooth, she smokes like the devil! Smokes on start-up, idle, rev, and slow-down.

Do I need a complete engine overhaul kit, or would sleeves and rings do? Any advise would be helpful since this is my "first".

Thanks, Larry

how long has this machine been sitting? i have seen engines that the rings stick and smoke like a tar pit. a lot of the time if you really work that engine hard it will loosen up and quit smoking i dont ever tear down a engine without working it a little

Larry, I don't think that the C-123 came with valve seals, I know it's predecessor the C-113 did not. They had valve guides only. If the valve guides are worn, it will smoke on start-up, but clear up quickly. A small amount of smoke on start-up should be considered normal.

"Smokes on start-up, idle, rev, and slow-down" sounds like more than just worn valve guides.

If I were you, I'd do a compression test on all cylinders. It sounds like you may need to do an overhaul. I would do it completely, sleeves, pistons, rings etc. Why go to all that work and put old pistons back in?

Larry it may be that you need the valve stem seals replaced to stop oil from being sucked in around the valve stems. They will get hard and brittle with age and not seal well. Dave

Thanks for your input. I have just noticed that
I also have water mixing with my oil. Guess I'll
do that overhaul now. It's good to know there are
many people out here that have completed what I'm
about to start.

Any comments or suggestions are very welcome.

Thanks again----- ----- --
