Can anyone give me the procedure to adjust a 6 volt voltage regulator - I know you should not have to adjust these but i have seen it done & and have done it myself years ago - to install an 8 volt battery in the place of a 6 this is a must - thanks

you'll want to set it to at least 9.2 volts but not more than 10 volts. optimal charge on a lead/acid battery occurs at 2.3 volts per cell. that's why you tend to see 13.8 marked on automotive voltmeters (6 * 2.3). start crossing about 2.5 volts and you're getting close to overcharge territory, leading to boiled/destroyed batteries. use a good voltmeter for setting. the closer you can get to 9.2 without going under the better you are.

I think you want to turn it up so you get a little over nine volts. I used two eights in series in a JD 730D that had the starter rewound for twelve volts and turned up the reg. to eighteen and a half volts

Disconnect battery.
Remove regulator cover.
Locate voltage regulator unit... will be wound with the smallest-gauge wire.

VERY SLIGHTLY increase spring tension on the moveable contact arm on the voltage regulator unit. There may be an adjusting screw to do this on older units, with most newer units,a SLIGHT bending of the tab the tension spring attaches to may be necessary.

Replace cover, connect battery, start the engine, and re-check the voltage after the unit warms up a bit.

Repeat as needed, to get the desired voltage. Be carefull to only change it a little at a time and re-check!
