Water Circulation on 1951 Model M

I am in the process of restoring a 1951 Model M. Is it normal to have to add water to the radiator often on this tractor? I heard that this has a gravity fed water system.

I presume you are referring to a John Deere "M". If that is correct, you have what is known as the "Thermo Siphon" cooling system. These systems used no water pump, or thermostat. It works on the principle that cool water sinks and the hot water rises. You shouldn't be having to add much water to the system if it is in good working order. They were a low pressure system, and they had to have a good air flow through the copper finned radiator with the fins kept straight, and clean. Be sure the fan pulls sufficent air through the radiator core, also these engine water jackets need to be cleaned, or descaled occasionally. Be sure that when you mix the antifreeze with the water to get it completely stirred up so that the flow is not hampered by the pure antifreeze not wanting to circulate like a diluted solution would. These systems will not work with clogged, dirty bent fins on a radiator core, loose or slipping fan belt. If the water level drops below the point where the top flow re-enters in to the radiator tank the flow will be hampered.The radiator cores work better painted a dull black to help with the heat absorption and transfer properties. They were good systems as long as the copper finned radiaror cores were used. They just aren't capable of handling or regulating the high compression engine temperatures.
