The upper bearing on the steering column is usually the problem when the column rises. it will need to be replaced. I've heard that a lot of places are selling plastic bearings. Don't get one of these. the slop in the steering wheel could be caused by the steering sector shaft bushings being wallered out. There are two on each side. You can drive the out and replace wioth new. John Deere make a spedial grease for steering boxes called cornhead grease. It is stiff enough not to leak and fluid enough to run back into the gears. Take out the oil fill plug and replace it with a grease zerk fitting. Don,t forget that 8N's had about three different steering boxes. I just redid mine and it works great. James

Thanks for the info, I foud out the shaft had worndown enough to let shaft screw back though the bearing block and raise up out of the bottom bearing. I drilled a hole thought the shaft and put a piece of roud stock through and tack wielded it to stop block, it worked.

Did you replace the bearings inside the box? did you adjust the set screw on the box, The one with the nut on it. That screw adjusts the pitman arm cross shaft, and takes out the "play" in the steering box. Don't get it too tight! I'm not too familiar with those models any more-i worked on them back in 1949 to '51, at the Ford dealer where i worked! RJ

Thanks for info I used the grease you told me about. T he shaft had worn down enough to let it go back through the bearing block, enough to raise steerin wheel. I drilled a hole through the shaft and put piece of round stock through and tack weilded it, it stopped the block from going too far.
