Tip for broken head studs...

The other day I broke off 2 studs in the block of my Farmall H. Being such a smart mechanic I drilled them out and tried using an easy-out on one of them. The easy out broke and the other hole is drilled off center so the machine shop now has more work.

IF you break a stud off, DO NOT do anything more to it. Take the piece to a machine shop and they can fix it up good as new.

i have always heard and practiced LIGHT lubrication on any threads whether they were head bolts or studs or even bolts for a pump mounting. by lightly lubing i mean just enough light machine oil or wd-40 or some such lube to just barely make the color of the dry threads look slightly wet, but not dripping off. not wanting to be a smarty pants here, but a little lube will make the fastener go in easier.

As Clint Eastwood said in one of his movies, "a man's gotta know his limitations." Every once in a while, I'm smart enough to stop before I reach my limitations! :)

On broken studs, though, it helps an awful lot if one has experience and the right tools.

Let us know how the H runs once you get it all back together!

This begs another question. When torqueing down a head, I would think it would be wise to lube the threads and the top of the head where the nut rides, correct? I'm sure some old studs are destined to snap but I would think this would help.
Also would help to get an accurate torque reading.

SAE has specified lubricating the threads for decades now. All their torque values are given for lightly lubricated threads.

Something that isn't in that list is the effects of lack of lubrication. You get metal binding in the threads, damaging the threads themselves. This increases the likelyhood of breaking the fastner, as well as decreasing the binding force between the bodies being fastened. In this case, failing to properly grip the head gasket, resulting in an increased incidence of head gasket failure.

So does this mean you can only torque a 5/16-18 bolt to a maximum of 13 ftlbs if its lubricated with graphite and oil before it will snap?
So should a head bolt be lubricated before torqueing to spec. or not?

Here is the torque specifications for 5/16"-18 bolts standard dry torque in ft-pounds:
grade 0-1-2 12ft-lbs
grade 3 17ft-lbs
grade 5 19ft-lbs
grade 6 24ft-lbs
grade 7 25ft-lbs
grade 8 29ft-lbs
to determine fine thread ratings increase the above ratings by 9%

My understanding is that unless lubricant is specified it should be done dry. If you do lubricate then use the chart in my previous post to determine how much you should reduce the torque setting on your wrench to achieve the same level of tightness. The lubricant allows the fastener to be stressed more for a given torque.
