This "always wanted" stock trailer I bought a couple of days ago had the wheel bearing dust caps missing. So I went to TSC and bought some and prior to installing, took the wheel off and thouroughly cleaned and lubed the hub.

While off I finally saw what an electric brake is.

There"s an electrical solenoid (rolled up wire)with a flat face that rides against a flat face on the back side of the brake drum. it is attached to an arm (just like on an emergency brake lever)which pushes the shoe against the drum when it moves away.

As current (to the solenoid) from the controller is increased (by braking), the (what is now a) electromagnet tries to glue it"self to the metallic brake drum surface, but can"t. Since the drum is turning (as the vehicle runs down the road) the magnet initially gets a slight hold on the brake drum surface. The harder you push on the brake pedal, the more current and the bigger the magnet and the more friction/ attachment capability. As all this is causing the magnet to be pulled away from it"s stop farther and farther and via the connecting arm, pushes the shoe against the drum harder and harder.

Really neat and very reliable.

Always wondered how they work. My travel trailer has electric brakes and thought I"d take it apart one day just to see for myself. Thanks for the brake lesson. K

There are some older controllers that actually did tap into the hydraulic system and pedal pressure did modulate current to the electric brakes. The newer electronic ones do it using a "set it and forget it" method. They usually have two controls. One sets the maximum current, the other sets the "attack" or rate at which the current ramps up from zero to maximum. Once set they respond the same regardless of pedal pressure. Usually, they have an override bar on them which will apply faster harder braking when you need to stop in a hurry.

Most trailer brakes work off the brake light switch. When you push the brake pedal, the switch closes, that gives a 12 volt input into your trailer brake controler. Then you adjust the output from the controler to the trailer brakes. That output remains constant, until the next time you adjust it. No matter how hard you push on the brake pedal. When we get new people at work. And they are going to be running one of the presses. It's always fun to tell them "The harder you push the start buttons, the faster the press will go". It's amazing how hard some people push those buttons. And do it all day long.LOL

Most modern electric brake controllers are inertia based. You install the controller and perform the initial adjustments to set it up for the physical location including the tilt of the unit. Once that is complete, they supply a voltage proportional to how hard you tow vehicle is stopping. Properly maintained electric brakes will lock up the wheels on a moderately loaded trailer if they are hit with a full 12 volts. Solid state electronics and a pendulum-like device make a wonderful combination. That reminds me of a story about a cheapskate that thought he could get away with just hooking the trailer brakes straight to the brake lights. It kinda worked until the first time he tried to use his turn signal.

Well that certainly makes sense as there is no connection between the brake pedal (directly) and the controller where the controller knows how far the pedal is deflected.

Beins I"m a mechanism guy I was wondering how the controller worked.

Imagine trying to figure out the millions of different postions brake pedals are on all cars when they stop soft, or hard.
