adding 12volt altenator system to magneto ignitio

Help! Tractor runs one hour and quits. Will not restart for a couple of hours since I added the 12 volt system. When i disconnect the battery the tractor runs 4 hrs+ Any ideas where to start?

Joe � That�s a puzzler� A true magneto operates completely independent of the rest of the electrical system - it doesn�t know (nor care) whether the starting/charging system is 6 volt, 12 volt or non-existent. Consequently your observed longer run time with the battery disconnected can only be by coincidence.

Suggest you try this: Reconnect the battery and run the tractor again. If/when it quits immediately pull a plug wire, hold the end about � inch from the block then crank the engine. If the mag is good you�ll see a fat, blue spark and know your problem is somewhere else. However if you get a weak yellow spark or no spark at all, the mag needs attention.

If I were to guess the problem is a failing coil or condenser in the mag � works OK when cool but not when the mag gets hot. Good luck and post back what you find!

I got lost somewhere.There was no statement that the magneto is being removed so what is the 12 volt conversion doing to ignition that will stop the engine? I do not see any mention that a distrbuter is being added to the mix.As I read it the heading says magneto ignition and adding an alternator.Dont mean to be nit picking,just dont understand.

I think he just meant that he was changing the charging system, not the whole ignition. Course iffin he had a hand crank and no lights, he wouldn't have had to bother, would he?
