I've got my Grandad's 31 Farmall Regular under restoration and at the fork in the road. He is long gone and can't ask him do I put it back to stock or leave it as he used it to make a living for 25 years. He had changed the exhaust manifold to the upright like the ones on an F30. The governor speed control was changed to the sawtooth type lever control. What would you do? Steve

As Stan said, it's all up to you. While it's a lot of fun to try and get a machine as close to original as possible, it is also equally sentimental to keep a few of the modifications that were made to it over the years and add to the tractor's uniqueness. For example, I've taken as much of my 1947 2N ford tractor back to original as possible except for things I had to replace like fenders and stuff. However, I left the homemade running boards on it because they were very well made and I've never seen another set like them and they work very well.

I even debated whether or not to replace 2nd gear in the transmission because of the distinctive roaring sound that i always remembered it making. Well, that became a no-brainer once I tore into the tranny and discovered teeth missing and brocken and such.

I personally would try and put the exhaust back correct if you can deal with the noise and I would try to find out what was original on the throttle lever, but it's up to you.

What is important is NOT what anyone else would do, but what you want to do. Your Grandad would probably like to see the old machine fixed up either way. Do it the way you want it, and it will still have all the memories, because it was his.
