can anyone help, my ford 2n makes gear noise when the tractor is moving in neutral, i discovered the shifter ball is worn and alowing the shifter handle to go down too far into the transmission and coming in contact with a moving gear. can anyone tell me if there is a wear sleeve or bushing i can get to move the shifter handle up about 3/16". any help will be very helpful.

I have never heard of an N-series having a shifter ball worn that badly. What is more likely (if it really is a 9N/2N) is that the neutral safety interlock hanger under the tranny cover got broken (very common) and it might be hanging down far enough to rub up against a gear. Its purpose is to prevent you from pushing down on the starter button when the tranny lever is in gear. 90% of them are broken. There is just one large spring that pulls down on the gear shift lever and a small clip that holds it on. If it were missing, you'd be able to pull the gear shifter almost all the way out so i Highly doubt you have a worn shifter lever.

At any rate, you'll have to pull the transmission cover which means removal of the hood and gas tank and all that fun stuff. Once you've got it off, then you'll really know what's going on in there. If you have any questions, email me or post it on the 9N/2N/8N board.

Perhaps you should remove the shifter cover assembly from the tractor and take it to a local machine shop to be evaluated. A good shop should be able to determine what to do for it. You may want to change the tranny lube in case any metal particles have contaminated it.
