I owen a late 1952 model 8N tractor that has just started with the PTO jumping out of gear on me.When I hook-up to my finnish mower to cut grass, after about 5 mins. the PTO jumps out of gear. Can anyone help me with this problem on why this is happing and how can I fix this?

Raymond,

Had the same trouble a few years ago. Ideas list before are all valid, but my trouble was that there is a press on "collar" on the PTO shaft itself. Mine had worked its way out an inch or two, thus allowing the PTO to occasionally disengage, usually under load. Take off your ORC (if you have one, and you should!) and see if you can move the PTO shaft in and out more than a quarter inch or so... it really sould not move at all. If so, its not too hard to remove the shaft and have a shop put the collar back where it is supposed to be. I am sorry I do not have my manual with me, or I could tell you what the actual part name for the "collar" I am speaking of.

I"m having the same trouble that Raymond is having
with his 8n. I have an 861. I"ve replaced the detent ball and spring on the shift mechanism and that didn"t work. Also what is the ORC?

I'm lazy and was in a hurry so I slipped a loop made in a tyewrap over the lever (in the engaged position) and anchored to a nearby bolt. I know it's sloppy engineering but I am only pleasing myself, not a customer or something.

Now as I put the lever in gear (don't even have to look) I just slip the loop over it and that's that. Been that way for about 3 years now.

1. Bad detent ball or spring on the PTO shift mechanism.

2. Worn splines on transmission countershaft or shift collar.

3. Twisted PTO shaft from shock overload, so splines are at an angle.

I have a 1961, 861 Ford that the Pto keeps disengaging. We've replaced the ball and spring in the shifter mechanism. Also we checked the output shaft coupling and it look ok. The Pto output shaft may wobble a very very little. It has no play and there's no vibration when the pto is engaged. I held a piece of wood against the pto shaft while it was running and it looks like it, again, woobles a very, very, little bit. Is this the cause of my troubles??

Would like to thank Bob on helping me with my PTO jumping out of gear.Bob it was the PTO shaft,it was twisted, so I replaced it with a havyduty shaft and all is well. Thanks again for your help.
