Restored Oliver 44 but gas tank was rusty inside. Doesn't leak but crud fills up the sediment bowl and kills the engine. Any ideas? liner? coating?

Yes I agree - I took a couple to a rad shop for cleaning - one a 30 year old tiller gas tank - and the other a gas tank off a Chrysler. Cheap fix and did the trick.

I used a kit I got from Eastwood on my '73 Vette. It worked great. Has both cleaner and sealer. Very easy instructions to follow although it is a many step process.

I used "Kreem" (avaliable from motorcycle shops). Havent used the Por15 but I hear its good.

I used Por 15 on a Ford tank and had to put an extra inline filter in the fuel outlet.

For some reason, the thing makes water. Don't do anything any different than any other tank on the place and they don't make water. Never did that before. But the tank is sealed. I'll give them that. Gotta open the filter (pull the hose off)and shake out the water (from the filter)about once a month.

Do not follow any advice that calls for mechanical removal of the corrosion. The inside of gas tanks is coated with terne metal, lead and tin I believe, that keeps the tanks from leaking but is easily removed.

Most radiator shops will pressure wash it, treat it with a chemical, and then slosh around a compound made for exactly that purpose. If done properly, it's a lifetime repair.

Here we've a radiator repair shop that will sand blast gas tanks, then coats them with a liner, a type of which is available at Value Auto Parts, the liner, that is. Good luck.

As I have seen suggested on here before, a short length of small chain will also work well to knock lose the crud. just drop it in and shake for all your worth, then remove and rinse out throughly. hope this helps.

A friend saves bearing balls and puts them in gas tanks and hauls them around in his pick-up truck till the balls clean the rust and crud up.I have never tried it yet so I can't say it does or doesn't work.lol,bob

Bad idea. Son tried it with a marble sized ball and knocked out his outlet filter screen ($45).

As I recall, a couple of handfulls of small lock washers and some diluted phosphoric acid is what I used on the last tank I did. Left it in for a couple of days and sloshed it around now and then...cleaned up nice. Then lined it with tank sealer and working great ever since.
