Is there a site that gives the basics on arch welding? I have owned a Lincoln arch welder for years and still havent learned how to lay down a nice consistent bead. I need to weld a new tip on one of my lift arms and would like to have a little more info. One person tells me to drag the stick straight and the next tells me to make small circles. Can anyone help me?

i need to know the basic skills in arch welding. such as what kind of school training to i need. what is the basic pay for arch welders. (for a school project.)

forget the idea of circles go with the straight forward idea .to start of with.Use a 2.5mm mild steel rod and set the welder in between 80-100amps dependant on welding position(lower for vertically upwards).hold the torch at an angle of 15-20 degrees towards the direction of travel away from the weld.take your time practise makes perfect

Hi Andy
Thanks so much for the tips. I started out welding my lift arms today and the first 1 1/2 inches looked like a pro did it but the rest looked like chicken scratch. I can't figure out if my problem is bad visibility or if maybe I start shaking to bad. I have bad nerves and sometimes my hands are not to steady. Guess I wasn't cut out to be a welder. Thanks anyway for your time I will keep trying.

I teach welding and ag mechanics. I've got a set of 4 exercises that I have my students do that takes them through the basics, email your mailing address and I'll send you a packet of stuff. As a couple of general observations: I would use 1/8" E6011 rods (fresh). I buy 10# cans with a plastic top for home. Grind a bevel cut, gap ends of arms the diameter of the rod. and tack top and bottem front and back. Weld left to right both sides (lift arm off tractor and lying flat) on 90 amps. Keep rod 80 to 90 degrees to weld (puddle slightly behind electrode holder). For the first pass I would go straight. Rod should remain exactly the diameter of the rod from the base metal at all times. Clean slag. Turn up welder one setting and make another pass using small half moons between earlier weld and base metal (both sides), clean and repeat until filled.
