My IH 240 was running rough then it wouldn't start at all. Changed out the plugs (which was overdue) but didn't help. Then I poked around the carb and found the oil cup on the air cleaner was full of gasoline. Dumped that out and now that she could get air of course she started right up, better than ever. Question is whether the oil cup full of gas is a symptom of a bigger carb issue, fuel line blockage, etc. or whether adjusting the needle (she was running rich) should take care of it. I was grinding the starter a lot maybe that caused it. Any thoughts would be appreciated.

I'm trying to remember if the air cleaner connection to the carb is horizontal, or if it curves upward like on the H, M, etc. If the former and your float is stuck open to the point that the weep hole in the carb can't handle it then it will run into the air cleaner cup. If so, then check to make sure the float is shutting off the fuel flow (you may need a new needle and seat) and that it is not hanging up on the inside of the carb. Adjusting the mixture needle (if any) won't help.
