ammeter for 6V system

Ammeter for the 6V system does not register tho the needle is NOT stuck; two terminals on back; what wires should be attached ( from where and to where) to the two terminals to get a batt charge reading? test shows generator is putting charge out, up to 7.5V,registers OK at the battery but ammeter shows nothing.

Draw yourself a picture. The ammeter is between the battery terminal and everything else electrical in the system EXCEPT the high current starting ckt. Therefore your elect ckt will probably be like this:
Big wire from batt hot (the side not connected to the chassis; polarity doesn't matter ) to one side of the starting solenoid (big terminal). From there a wire goes to one side of the ammeter and everything else electrical comes off (either directly or indirectly) the other side of the ammeter. That way the ammeter measures batt input (+ when charging) and output (- ign key on, lights on etc.). If you don't like the direction the needle is moving, swap the wires at the ammeter and it will deflect the opposite direction; i.e. charge will be - rather than +. May choose to do that on + grounded system; and then you may not. To me it is + always as you are ADDING energy to the battery (regardless of the polarity hookup to the tractor) which is a +.

The other side of the starting solenoid (other big wire) goes to the starter terminal. It's that simple.

Thanks for making it simple; didn't seem logical current would not flow through the ammeter if wires from somewhere were attached only to one terminal (toward starter solenoid).

Any time buddy. I find that if I map out complex problems or look at them as simplistically as possible, there usually exists a simplistic solution. Also, I try to stay functionally alert. What is the function of this, how does it accomplish that, what happens if it doesn't, and what could something else do to prevent this function from happening.

Depending on your generating method, you may have something different; i.e. dc gen vs alt. Since you said 6v, I'd assume a dc gen.

Seems the dc gen windings are remaining hooked up to the batt term, not removed when you turn the key off. In an alt system, you can connect the output of the alt directly to the ammeter as the diodes in the alt block this discharge.

So what has to happen is the the gen output to the batt (via the ammeter) has to also be via something else and this has to be your ignition switch as there is nothing else on the tractor to do the job.

If you have an old Motors Brand Auto Manual (Blue one) that has a generator hookup you can see what needs to be done. There is also the voltage regulator to include in the wiring and you need to look at a diagram, not words. Otherwise, a wiring diagram of a tractor (any tractor to get the idea) using a dc gen should work. Polarity is not a problem if you see a diagram with a neg gnd; which I doubt as I believe the 12v system (for xixtr radio's and other things) is when they went to the neg gnd (for convenience). You are looking for hookup methodology.

I agree. If the gen is connected to the ammeter, when you turn the engine off it will bleed the batt dry.

Failed to read both your messages; FYI: engine is started by momentary (push botton) switch which activates the solenoid near instrument panl,engages starter etc. There is NO ignition key etc to turn off or on ( as on my OC46). Plugs get fire via the mag when starter turns engine over; Engine will continue running even if battery cables are disconnected; engine is stopped by grounding the mag out. All battery is needed for on the OC3 is to power the starter. Once engine is running battery's work is done, then accepts charge per specs.

AM sure you know all this but want to be clear about elec hookup as it exists at the moment ' this includes wire from BATT terminal on voltage regulator to ammeter; wire from other side of ammeter connects to where large batt cable from neg batt terminal connects to solenoid..cable from other side of the solenoid goes directly to the starter; so charging current flows through ammeter, then via solenoid terminal to the battery (neg battery terminal as it is a Pos ground system)

Hope my explanation doesn't add to confusion; I'm trying!

I didn't know you were on a magneto. Has been a long time since I visited a voltage regulator, but I'm going to say that it is why you are getting current when you shut down the sytem. ----- ----- ----- ----
Relay contact sticking in the regl. is the guess.

Guessing again until I get to the books. This is probably the senario:

1. starter engine which rotates magneto which generates electrical energy via electromagnetics. This energy is controlled by ignition points to get high voltage out of it when and where you want it.

2. The engine fires and starts up, rotating the armature of the generator. This generates a dc voltage (in the armature) which is sent to the voltage regl ("A" contact as I recall) which pulls-in the contacts within the regl(closes them) and connects the field (F) winding of the generator to the battery (via the ammeter)which starts charging the batt because a voltage is induced in the field, by rotation. This volage is directly proportional to rotating speed and is why generators were notorious for not charging at low rpm's. They had to spin fast enough to generate more voltage than was on the battery to push energy into the battery.

The voltage regulator controls charging current to the battery and monitors voltage (regl adjustments at factory). ----- ----- ----- ----- ----- ----
When the engine is turned off, the armature stops rotating and the voltage on the regl (A) disappears which should cause the regl contacts to drop out. Apparently they don't (pitted and stuck together---welded). Since the generator Field winding is shorted to the gen chassis (internal to the gen), you have a direct short (a little resistance) to chassis from the battery hot term and the ammeter pegs discharge.

Problem was stuck relay points in the voltage regulator which was creating a short draining the 6V battery when the engine was shut down.
Everything on the OC3 working as it should.

Bob: Join the game!! Diagram #5 is the right one and my OC3 is wired accordingly. Now..why does ammeter show negative needle position when mag is grounded, engine shut down, and battery cables all connected (6V pos ground)?Test at batt shows 7.5V charge with engine running. I'm stumped. Is the regulator faulty...new 8/2002? Just as soon correspond by e-mail and get off the discussion board.

The "cutout" points are welded together. Even if you have a voltage regulator, rather than a cutout, one of the units inside is the "cutout relay".

This may have happened because somewhere along the line the battery has been installed with the opposite ground polarity of what it was when the regulator was first installed, without re-polarizing the generator before restarting the engine.

If you are the adventurous type, you can remove the cover from the voltage regulator and look for the unit with the heaviest contacts. This is your cutout relay. Pry the stuck points apart and touch them up a little with a point file. give them a puff of compressed air, if available, to remove and debris. WARNING>>> the unit may work just fine, or continue to stick. If it sticks again, the thin silver coating on the points is probably worn through, and it's best to replace the regulator, because when it sticks and kills the battery, there is a potential to burn out the generator, or start a wiring harness fire.

If you need to replace the regulator, make sure that the battery ground polarity is the way you want it to be, and then, after installing the regulator, polarize the system by using a jumper wire to connect the "BATT" and "A" terminals for a couple of seconds, before starting the engine.

From then on, when re-installing the battery, always connect it up the same way.

Bob: Think we have flooded this board long enough about the ammeter etc. Discovered the problem was as you described it.

So far no more sticking of the points but if the problem happens again I willIknow where to check.

Right about diagram #5. Same question I asked of Bob: OC3 wired accordingly. but why does ammeter needle fall completely to left indicating discharge when engine is shut down?
I checked connections between regulator and generator and they are correct. Is the regulator faulty..new 8 /2002 but who knows.?

Mark: Call off the dogs, coon has been treed, so to speak. Between my asking about the regulator and your suspicion about relay points being stuck, the hunt is over!
Found points in the relay connected to GEN side of the regulator stuck, not hard but not free; pried points apart, used a little emergy cloth to clean up the contacts, reinstalled, made all connections..no negative on ammeter, full charge with engine running.
Learned a valuable lesson in response to your initial follow-up about simplistic solutions to fairly simple problems. A process of elimination in this case..wiring correct so problem somewhere else...and it was.
