I had removed the push rods from a TO-20 and had them all organized for where they were positioned in the engine. A couple of the barn cats got into a fight, the dog came to watch and add his two cents to the ruckus. Now I have the push rods out of the holder and on the shop floor. Now what? I don't think that just putting them in any ol' spot will be very good.

The mental picture that I got from reading your post made me laugh....as for the results of the cat fight "Who'd a thunk it?!....stuff like that happens to me all the time, it seems! :-)

Push rods do not make that much difference unless there are different length ones for some valves. Lifters are a different story and must be reused on the same lobes.

Thanks guys, I really appreciate it. Seems all the manuals I've read stress putting them back into the same spot they came from but never about what happens if they aren't. BTW, all the rods checked out straight so now it is upward, onward and I can sleep at night.

They'll work just fine, although it's a good idea to re-check the valve settings a couple of times, as the engine gets a few hours under it's belt.

There will probably be a little more change in the valve settings over the first couple of hundred hours, as the push rods get "seated" in their new homes than there would have been if all were put back where they came from.

Like Buck said, don't worry about it. Roll them on a flat surface, (piece of glass good, mirror better) check for straighness. Put them back in, engine doesn't care. Joe

Relax- Probably some old myth relating to proper mechanical repair. Of course there are many manuals that do tell you to put them back where they came from. Cats sortin them out is a fairly good method.
