My 1974 MF 165 tractor runs too cold.It has A 212 perkins gas engine,the thermostat is a 180 degree F.& checks out fine.The exhaust is black & sooty . The carb has been re-built & the air-fuel mixture appears to be correctly adjusted. Could the thermostat by-pass be causing this problem? If so what is the suggested fix?

I'd replace the thermo any how its still probably the problem, you may want a 195 instead of the 180 to be sure
