Tractor tires

I have been privileged to see many nicely restored tractors on the various boards. One item that is often noticeable on freshly painted and restored tractors is that they have old, worn tires, many times with paint on them! My question is this: is it more preferable to have original, though worn, tires on a restored tractor, or do the owners "cheap out" and figure that as long as the tires hold air they are good enough? I restore cars and new tires are always a must. I intend no offense, but would really like for someone to enlighten me. I am planning to restore an old Oliver, and any help would be appreciated. All the best to you all..... ..Greg

To put new tires and tubes all around on a tractor will cost in the neighborhood of $1000. Sometimes more, depending on the tire size. IN some cases we'd be doubling our investment. In '98 I put new tires all around on my 1/2 ton Chevy for just over $300. I saw list on a 16.9-30 that was over $600. (That's why the tires on my MM UTS look like a dog gnawed on them.)
I do agree that if a person is going to paint the rims with the tires mounted he should take some precautions against overspray. At the same time, I've found its pretty hard to completely mask a tire.
Hey guys! How do you mask off your tires When you paint the rims?

after painting rims, mask off rims and paint tires with flat black paint. The rims are alot easier to mask then the tire is.

I use 2 inch masking tape around edge of rim then after paint clean up with paint thinner then use a rubber cleaning product for tires like Armstrong tire glaze. Many brands at auto store to choose from and they all do a good job removing dirt and paint and etc. and makeing tires shine and parade ready.

depends on how much you want to spend. like an Oliver has 38 inch tires and you can go the cheaper tires if you don't work it much are approx. $200. or more each. But just bought a set of 14.9 x 38 tires for my massey and had them put on with new tubes and the bill with just under $1000. of the new radial tires for 2 tires and tubes. My neighbor put a set on his 4 wheel drive and they were $2100. each. So I don't think we cheapen out during a restoration. You just have to justify a new set.
