Painting background on Name Plate

Restoring a Ferguson TO35 and would like to paint the background of the hood name plate (Ferguson 35) green the color of the cast iron. The plate is completely unpainted now, And I would like the word Ferguson-35 unpainted. Would appreciate any suggestions as to how I could accomplish this task. Thanks, Ray

Thanks to all that commented on my question reguarding painting emblem. After I have completed this task I will post the method that I used and the end results. Once again it was proven that this forum is worth its weight in gold. Thanks, Ray A

I've had good results by just spraying the whole part then using lacquer thinner to remove the paint from the areas I wanted bright... a lot faster & easier than masking & produces good results! You may want to experiment first to make sure it'll work for your particular application! You'll want to remove the paint from the raised areas BEFORE the paint cures or you'll have a mess!!!!

If the emblem is made of stainless you may have to scuff it up a little bit so that the paint will stick better. You can do this carefully with a small piece of sand paper, say maybe 120 grit. Being carefull not to sand the letters that you don't want to get paint on. Then what I do is take an artist brush the size you need and dip it in Vasolin jelly and paint the part that you don't want to get paint on. Spray paint the whole thing, and then when the paint is completly dry, wipe off the Vasolen.

I mask the areas that I don't want painted with a brush and white artist's acrylic paint then spray paint with canned spray paint. When the spray paint is dry the acrylic paint can be rubbed off with a scotch brite pad. This works best if you don't use a really heavy layer of spray paint but do use a heavy coat of acrylic paint. Sometimes a knife helps with scraping off the acrylic, but then you risk scratching the metal.

Hi Ray,
Although I collect Olivers, I did a Farmall 560D last winter. The Farmall plate was stamped. I tried masking and got a mess. Then I found out that thinning the paint, or squirting spray can paint (it's thin) into a small container, then use a brush to daub the paint into the low areas.
The thin paint seeks it's own level and I came out with a professional looking job! (by accident)

Ray, I have also painted emblems before...I cover them with masking tape and use an exato modeling knike to cut out the parts I want painted. clean the emblem well before taping and let it dry before removing tape. you will spend some time pressing down the edges of the tape but it makes for a nice looking job.
