I have a crack in a block that is on outside of the water jacket. It is on a tractor, and easy to get to.

I have been told that I have to use nickel steel rod and stick welder. All I have is a wire feed
110 welder. Is there a special wire that anyone knows about that I could use to make this repair?

I already tried using JB weld, and it won't hold.
The crack appears to expand when engine heats up
causing the JB to crack. I am not knocking JB weld, it is great stuff, just won't work in this particular situation.

Any ideas you share will be appreciated.

Not to hurt your feelings but if all you have to work with is a 110 wirefeeder then take it to a shop that does cast welding. There is a nickel based wire for wirefeeders but I doubt your 110 machine has enough amperage for material as thick as the block. Preparation and heat management is the key. You can stitch across the crack with a wire feeder after cleaning up and "V"ing out the crack. Drill a hole at the end of the crack on both ends before you start welding. This will help keep it from running. Dont just weld down the crack either. Little here, little there, lot of cooling time in between until it is welded up. You can actually get away with using ER70S wire doing that. Wouldn't recommend the flux core only solid wire. If you get it too hot it will just make it more expensive to fix. Your JB Weld will come back to haunt you when you start welding also as it will "cook" out of the metal and cause problems. Hopefully you can grind it all away.

The best method for cast welding is cast iron powder with a cast welding torche setup. The block has to be totally stripped and clean for this to be done as the block needs to be heated evenly (in an oven) to 600 degrees and kept at that temp while being welded. Then it will be allowed to cool over several hours time so as not to crack again or somewhere else. If this is done properly after cleanup and paint you will never be able to see the repair. Probably cost you at least $100 possibly more depending on how much the shop has to do to get it ready but well worth the money.

most of my experience with welding the out side of an engine block was with a stick welder. i usually use a cast rod not stainless. i have two different rods i like to use. depending on what the iron wants to take. the big thing is preperation. and pacience. to cold weld iron you have to stop welding and let it cool down just about the time you get it flowing good. it takes time, practice, and most of all luck. i do beleive they make a wire for iron that is not stainless, not sure though. good luck.

There are other processes to repair cracks in blocks. Check with some machine shops and see if they repair these cracks. They use a drill, tap and screw in a series of alloy plugs that expand and contract at the same rate as cast. We had a sand hole repaired in a JD block about 1955 with this method and it is still holding.

I don't know what is available as far as wire. If it were mine, I would take it to my welder guy. Someone that welds all sorts of stuff. Not sure what my welder would use for rod, but he would get it welded up so it would hold.
