I'm thinking about getting a lincoln 225 buzz box/stick welder. I already have a 30amp 230V circuit to my garage. When I contacted lincoln, they recommend at least 60 amps. What do you have? Do you need that much amperage? What's the least needed?

I've been running my buzz box for years on a 50 amp circuit. I've had no problems with it. That circuit is also used to run my MIG. I would not run it on a 30 amp. Your asking for trouble.

I guess you'll soon find out after welding with it the first time, then you will see that you will need the 4 gauge wire

Before you increase the breaker amperage, be sure that the wire will handle it. It is very important to have the correct wire size from the breaker. If you go to a 60 amp breaker, you might need to go up to a size four wire.

The 30 amp will work ok as long as you aren't trying to burn/cut metal with it. Also as long as you don't weld up around the 225 setting much, if you do it will start tripping the breacker. Years ago I used a 30 amp to run my welder and it did ok other then up at the highest settings on that buzz box.
